FC St. Pauli – Germany’s Progressive, Punk Soccer Club

FC St. Pauli is Germany’s favorite second division club. This is due in large part to the progressive vision of the club and its supporters, which have fought against racism, sexism and fascism. Ardent fans and a punk attitude alone don’t make for a winning soccer club, however, and St. Pauli has been faced with the modern sporting realities of sponsorship contracts, marketing plans and business lounges. Now on the verge of falling to the third division, the club looks to balance profitability with the social responsibility that grew its fan base. We check in with fans, players and legends to see how St. Pauli plans to navigate the landscape of modern European soccer.

  1. Calling themself tolerant, progressive, democratic….as long as you agree with them politically of course. Otherwise they call you racist, nazi etc……Antifascist ? Haha, what's in a name.

  2. Supporter since 1989! I was young back in the day and fell in love with the pale white kit, players like Kocian, Duve, Knäbel and Ippig, loved the iconic logo and the fact it was back than the only football club I know with brown white colors
Didn’t know anything about Hamburg, Hafenstrasse, Punk and even the Neighborhood St. Pauli. I was a very unpolitical clueless Person, only a common footbsall lad like thousands of others.
FCSP changed that for me over the time and maybe made me a „better human being“. I believe that’s the reason the Club chose ne back than as i feel. . I honestly never ever been to Millerntor in my life, but followed FCSP to every match abroad in western and south western Germany. Maybe only few would even recognize me in Hamburg and I’m barely a „forum or comment section guy“ even after all those years there are times i don’t feel being a real supporter if I have never been to a home game yet and yes i’m biased about the „brand“ nowadays but the love for FCSP remains and in 2022 I’m finally going to be at my first home game at the age of 47!. Strange love from abroad I’d call it but nevertheless it’s love

  3. Socialist football club that relies on merchandising as the main source of income lmao. FC St Pauli are the literal definition of irony.

  4. This is not punk. This is a brand. I respect the politics of the club, but these people are so fucking plastic it's embarrassing. This is about as punk as Britney Spears.

  5. I understand the feeling some fans have of ownership over the club, but at the same time St. Pauli is widely known for the antifascist and progressive streak of the fanclub. Should be a point of pride that so many want to come and see it for themselves, no?

  6. at the end of these season we landed on 7 (!!) place cause after this game vs. Aue wew won almost every game-why ever. now,2021 and few weeks back , we find ourselfs in the basement of league again…just to win 5 from 6 following games. today game vs. Darmstadt not included- still don:t know result…but in 10 sec.-tell u later vamos fcsp!

  7. I’m an Italian Spurs fan, I love Celtic too and I know St. Pauli fanbase has a great feeling with Celtic Fans. I disagree with their Political ideas (they’re communist and I’m not) but I love their club. They want to keep their own identity, so I respect them.👏👏👏
