HAVERTZ WITH THE WINNER! | Arsenal vs Brentford (2-1) | Premier League Highlights

We moved to the top of the Premier League as Kai Havertz’s fourth goal in successive league games sealed a hard-fought win over Brentford.

Declan Rice opened the scoring with a fine header, but an error from the returning Aaron Ramsdale just before half-time allowed Bees striker Yoane Wissa to divert his clearance into our net to level the scores.

Our keeper redeemed himself with two great saves in the second half to keep us level, before Havertz popped up with five minutes remaining to net the strike that sent us back to the division’s summit after eight successive domestic victories.

Having scored 21 times in our previous four league matches, we were quickly on the look for number 22, and just two minutes in Ivan Toney had to nudge a wicked Rice corner off his goalline to avoid suffering a quick concession.

But given our razor-sharp form in front of goal, it always looked like we would soon find the net and that proved to be the case after 18 minutes.

Ben White found Bukayo Saka on the right flank, who returned it to the full-back. He had ample time to put a pinpoint delivery into the area where Rice had got in front of Mads Roerslev to glance a fine header past Mark Flekken and net his sixth goal of the campaign – the best return of his career.

Filled with confidence, our attack was purring and were soon carving out more chances. Havertz shot straight at Flekken after some neat footwork from Martin Odegaard, and with 10 minutes of the half remaining the German was sent one-on-on with the keeper and dinked the ball past him, but agonisingly wide of the far post.

Saka then drilled an attempt over the bar as we looked to double our lead, but in first-half stoppage-time, we suffered an unlikely setback.

There seemed little danger when William Saliba played the ball was played back to Ramsdale, but he dallied and was closed down by Wissa who blocked the clearance and saw it deflect into the net, to score for the third successive game and hand the visitors a shock equaliser.

After the interval our shot-stopper came to the rescue though. Toney tried to catch him out off his line from 40 yards with an audacious attempt and just as it looked to be sneaking over Ramsdale, he managed to claw it out of the sky and away for a corner.

But the atmosphere inside Emirates Stadium was rocking as our supporters drove our players forward and we nearly conjured up the all-important second goal when Gabriel showed his prowess from a corner to head goalwards but saw it scrambled off the line by a couple of Bees.

Having lost seven of their last eight Premier League away games Thomas Frank’s team seemed desperate to grab a point and tried to eat up as much time as possible by taking their time over throw-ins and set-pieces, and they nearly managed to spring another surprise with 20 minutes remaining when Nathan Collins found himself in an advanced position and headed towards the top corner but Ramsdale again produced heroics to acrobatically tip it over.

The game was on a knife edge and Rice came so close to grabbing his second of the evening when after a corner was cleared back to Odegaard he teed up the England man who saw a first-time effort ping off the top corner of the woodwork, but eventually our pressure told with five minutes to go.

Once again White was in the thick of the action again, this time linking up with Odegaard before dinking a cross into the box and this time it was Havertz who powered it past Flekken to score yet again and give the Gooners in attendance something to celebrate for their efforts.

We then saw out nine minutes of stoppage time to secure our third win of the campaign over Brentford, and move to the division’s summit ahead of Liverpool’s game with Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

INTO THE UCL LAST 16! | Arsenal vs Lens (6-0) | Havertz, Jesus, Saka, Martinelli, Jorginho

We qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League with a convincing, confident, classy 6-0 win at home to RC Lens on Wednesday night.

Kai Havertz got his second goal in as many games to give us an early lead, before Gabriel Jesus made it two, Bukayo Saka got a third, and Gabriel Martinelli then got his name on the scoresheet with 28 minutes played in a dominant first-half display.

Martin Odegaard scored for 5-0 on the brink of half-time, and Jorginho became our sixth different goalscorer of the night from the penalty spot late on.

It took just seven minutes for us to have our first sight of goal as Oleksandr Zinchenko crossed for Jesus, who could only cushion the ball into the side netting past the near post.

Five minutes later, Saka found Takehiro Tomiyasu overlapping on the right wing. He delivered a cross for Havertz who headed the ball back across goal and just wide of the post.

Then we took the lead, Tomiyasu’s cross not cleared and Jesus heading the ball into the path of Havertz, who simply tucked it past the onrushing Brice Samba for 1-0.

Jesus was the man who slotted home into the bottom left corner for our second goal of the night, but it wouldn’t have happened without the lung-busting run of Saka, wriggling his way through the middle of the pitch exactly five years on from his senior debut before laying it off for our Brazilian forward.

“We’ve got super Mik Arteta” rung around Emirates Stadium, inviting a third from our glorious Gunners, and Saka duly obliged. Martinelli cut in from the left and his shot was pushed kindly into Saka’s path, and he simply couldn’t miss.

In the 27th minute, Martinelli drifted in from the left wing again and curled the ball into the far corner on his right foot as we went 4-0 up inside the first half-hour – a ruthless performance.

Elye Wahi forced a save from David Raya from a narrow angle at the other end for Lens’ first real chance of the game in the 37th minute, before Facundo Madina smashed the post from distance. Angelo Fulgini then struck straight into Raya’s gloves.

Martinelli hit the side netting with half-time approaching before Odegaard got in on the act, volleying into the bottom right corner from Tomiyasu’s cross after our full-back had flown past Saka again on the overlap.

Tomiyasu was replaced by Ben White at half-time while Zinchenko made way for Jakub Kiwior.

We made another change with 25 minutes to go as Reiss Nelson came on for Saka.

Unsurprisingly, the second half was nowhere near as eventful and it took until the 67th minute for the first notable chance, Havertz performing some excellent trickery by the corner flag and pulling it back for Odegaard, whose deflected shot was spilled before Lens cleared the danger.

Jorginho came on for Declan Rice, who had looked typically comfortable on the ball throughout, with 15 minutes remaining.

White headed over from an Odegaard corner before Eddie Nketiah became our final substitution of then game when he came on for Jesus with eight minutes to go.

With five minutes remaining, we were awarded a penalty, courtesy of a VAR check, due to a handball from Abdukodir Lhusanov. Odegaard gave it to Jorginho, who calmly slotted into the bottom right for 6-0.

HIGHLIGHTS | Manchester United v Arsenal (2-0) | United win 5-3 on penalties

Two first-half goals condemned us to defeat in the second match of our U.S. Tour.

In the first-ever meeting between the teams on American soil, 82,262 supporters were inside the MetLife Stadium, but we failed to get going after Manchester United opened the scoring through Bruno Fernandes’ long-range strike on the half-hour. Jadon Sancho doubled the lead soon afterwards and although Eddie Nketiah came close in the second-half, we tasted defeat for the first-time this close season.

HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Watford (1-1) | Pre-season friendly

We kicked off our preparations for the 2023/24 season with a 1-1 draw with training ground neighbours Watford at London Colney on Saturday, thanks to a second-half equaliser from Marquinhos.

Mikel Arteta named a strong starting XI, consisting of the players who returned to training at the start of the week, before turning to his youth players in the second-half.

We had an early chance to take the lead in the behind-closed-doors friendly, but a dangerous cross into the box from Reiss Nelson ended up in the hands of Watford keeper Daniel Bachmann.

The visitors responded, pressing high up the pitch, but 17-year-old midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly was positioned well to halt Ken Sema’s burst into the box.

Late in the half we had a couple of chances to take the lead. First Eddie Nketiah found himself through on goal, but the striker was denied by a last-gasp challenge from the covering Watford defender.

Not long after, a low driven pass from Gabriel through the middle, fell to the feet of Nketiah but his shot was blocked. From the resulting corner, Leandro Trossard’s delivery into the box caused confusion, before it was eventually cleared for a throw in.

We were made to pay when Watford broke the deadlock just before the whistle – Ismael Kone on the scoresheet.

With building up fitness naturally a key priority, the manager made wholesale changes at the break, with nine players replaced.

A much younger side opened the second half with an early opportunity to equalise through Mika Biereth, but the 20-year-old striker’s shot on goal was comfortably dealt with.

However we drew level 10 minutes after the restart. Rob Holding started the move, finding Biereth, whose pass freed Amario Cozier-Duberry. The winger’s shot was saved but only pushed into the path of Brazilian forward Marquinhos, who coolly slotted home the rebound.

Both teams contested fiercely for the winner, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Starting XI: Arthur Okonkwo, Ben White, Gabriel, Rob Holding, Cedric, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Leandro Trossard, Reiss Nelson, Mauro Bandeira, Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah.

Subs: James Hillson, Marquinhos, Mika Biereth, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Alex Kirk, Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Ethan Nwaneri, Ismail Ouland-M’hand, Charles Sagoe Jr, Lino Sousa, Reuell Walters.
