Enjoyed your podcast. You are correct. Switchbacks are the zigzag trails up a mountain. Colorado Springs sits at the base of Pikes Peak (14,000’ mountain). The fans nominated different names, then voted on a couple of selections. “Switchbacks” won.
The supporter group did the same for their name and “Trailheads” won. Every start of a trail (switchback hike) has a trailhead to mark the beginning, so the name suited the supporters.
Btw, we just refer to the team as Switchbacks FC. Adding the city name makes it too much of a mouth full.
