Man Utd's issue is the wages they pay.
You have to question whether a player wants to play for the team if the wages you offer are hugely above market value.
Take Harry Maguire. Utd offered to make up the rest of his wages for this season, but as he would be out of pocket the following season he said no. I have zero doubt that if he was not a Southgate favourite and Southgate had told him he would not play in the Euros unless he was a regular starter, that West Ham move would have happened. As it is he can earn a fat bundle of cash, ride the bench and know Southgate will pick him.

One crucial mistake that every United Managers made was that equating expensive players with good quality and performance. Not necessarily. ETH already spent about 400 million and look like he has no clue about observing potentials of players that he could turn into great players. He only relied upon his ex players from Ajax and that's it. If he took some notes from Fergi's book of not overpaying for players as well as trust in club youngster, things will be different a bit. But one thing is that Ten Hag is not a great tactician and often messed up the timing of his substitution.
