Barcelona wanted to buy Paulinho because they wanted more Brazilians in hopes of keeping Neymar happy. The Brazilian PSG players were trying to convince Neymar to come over and Neymar was apparently thinking about it in order to be around his friends more. Messi knew of this so he tried to convince Barcelona to buy more Brazilians and I guess Paulinho was one of them
